ca. 4/6th A.D. used to write letters on, etc. Dating from about the 4/6th century A.D., this pottery fragment or ostraca, shows message written in Coptic Egyptian using the Greek alphabet. Because of the inavailability of inexpensive writing material, broken pottery fragments such as the above, were used to write letter on or even used as receipts for taxes paid.
